ECONOMIC SITUATION – May 2022

  1. The suffering of more than 1.2 million public service employees and their dependents continues and their living situation exacerbates due to the interruption of their salaries since the transfer of CBY operations from the capital, Sana’a, to the governorate of Aden in August 2016. This has led to a high unemployment rate and a lack of job opportunities, while the situation further deteriorated, and the humanitarian catastrophe increased.
  2. Amidst the worst humanitarian famine in the world, the Saudi-led War Coalition and their mercenaries continue to loot the revenues of crude oil and gas during the month of May by selling millions of barrels via giant ships that come almost monthly to the ports of Ash-Shihr, Al-Nashima, Bir Ali and others. The total value of the looted-and-sold oil and gas amounted to nearly 180 billion YR, which was sent to directly to some personal bank accounts outside Yemen. This amount could have been quite sufficient to disburse the public sectors employees’ salaries for about three months.
  3. A source in the Ministry of Oil and Minerals of the National Salvation Government confirmed that, during May only, the looted domestic gas, from which 75 trailers are sold daily, reached 2,325 trailers, containing 4.8 million cylinders, at a value of 3568 YR per cylinder, according to the mercenaries in Marib. This means that the revenues of domestic gas received by the mercenaries during the month of May amounted to 17.2 billion YR.
  4. The ongoing economic blockade on imports and ships of oil derivatives, and the rise in food prices in Yemen this year, led to the inability of millions of Yemenis to access food, which greatly exacerbated the humanitarian suffering.
  5. The War Coalition forces, led by the US, KSA and UAE, continue to detain oil derivatives ships, despite completing all the procedures of inspection through the United Nations Verification and Inspection Mechanism in Djibouti (UNVIM) and obtaining UN pass permits confirming that the cargo conforms to the stipulated standards. By this, they absolutely disregard the announced truce agreement.
  6. During the UN-declared two-month truce, the Saudi-led War Coalition continues to directly target economic facilities and services to achieve the maximum possible extent in increasing the human suffering of the Yemeni people. This can be clearly confirmed through the following table:
